“One word to summarise the experience — Unique”

Application & Assessment

October 12, 2021 — I applied directly on HackerRank’s careers page. The interesting part was the job description. There was no job description. The uniqueness of the process began from here.

The first step in the process was the resume screening done by Hari (Co-Founder & CTO) himself. To maintain consistency in the design, we had to create the resume using HackerResume and use it in the application.

The next step was to complete a coding challenge. It was meant to test if we can convert a problem given in English to logic and write code in any language. It was a quick process to create the resume, apply and complete the coding challenge.

Round 1

October 14, 2021 — I received a call from the recruiter. I successfully passed the resume screening round and was invited for the next rounds.

Next in the process was a call with the Engineering Manager. I scheduled it to be as early as possible. HR informed me that the questions will be based on my resume & the projects I’ve worked on to date.

Yet, I was expecting some coding questions. Because that’s what interviews are all about.

October 16, 2021 — I joined the call with the Engineering Manager. The interview was exactly like the recruiter mentioned. We talked about my resume and past projects. It was a pretty stress-free interview.

We usually don’t experience such chill interviews, especially with Engineering Managers. In the evening, I received an email to schedule the next round with Hari (Co-Founder & CTO).

Round 2

I scheduled it for the next day. I was excited to meet Hari. This was the first time I was directly being interviewed by the Co-Founder of any big company.

To prepare me, I read about him and watched his videos. I wanted to get an idea of how he thinks. I was meeting a big Co-Founder for the first time, so I also listed some questions related and not related to the internship.

October 17, 2021 — I met Hari. Like the previous interview, this was also based on my resume and past projects. We started discussing an idea Hari has for HackerRank. It was a mini-brainstorming session.

The time passed very quickly. We went a few minutes over time due to my questions. Overall, we had a good discussion. Hari shared that the recruiter will reach out with further steps.

Result

October 17, 2021 (Evening) — I got an email from the recruiter asking if I am free for a quick call. She called and asked me to guess what this call was all about. I shared that maybe she will tell me about the next round/steps.

But she said ‘No! you are all wrong.’ and I was selected for the Winter Internship at HackerRank.

This was an experience so smooth, quick and stress-free that it felt like it didn’t even happen. I was selected over the weekend. My process began on Saturday and I was an incoming HackerRank intern by Sunday night.

I was HackerRanked in 24 hours.
